The animal’s ability to traverse a beam was assessed in the beam walking test using an elevated horizontal rod (90 cm × 2.5 cm, 30 cm above the table surface) connected to two platforms [6]. Animals were placed on both platforms for 15 seconds, then placed perpendicularly on the beam halfway between the platforms and given 40 seconds for testing. Due to the innate tendency to avoid falling, animals walked along the beam towards a platform. Scoring: 5, animal reached the platform within 25 seconds; 4, animal reached the platform between 25 and 40 seconds; 3, animal moved halfway to a platform and stayed on the beam for at least 25 seconds; 2, animal moved less than halfway on the beam and stayed on the beam for at least 25 seconds; 1, animal did not move and stayed on the beam for 40 seconds; and 0, animal fell off the beam in less than 25 seconds if animal moved along the beam or animal fell off the beam in less than 40 seconds if animal did not move

Beam-walking tests were performed using two different wooden beams: a 1 cm wide rectangular beam and a cylindrical ridged beam 8 mm in diameter. Both beams were 30 cm long and placed 30 cm above the bench top. The performances were graded according to the ability of the mouse to walk along the beam from one end to the other as follows : score 0 = the mouse falls down or does not move on the beam, score 1 = the mouse crosses the beam (from one tip to the other) with one hind limb hanging, score 2 = the mouse crosses the beam with more than 3 foot slips (any foot slips off the top surface of the beam); score 3 = the mouse crosses the beam normally but only after a stimulus (noise or slap in the hindquarters); score 4 = the mouse crosses the beam normally without any stimulus
